Composite insulators are a special type of insulating component that plays a crucial role in overhead transmission lines.
In the past, insulators were primarily used on utility poles. With technological advancements, they have gradually evolved into disc-shaped insulators suspended at one end of high-voltage power line towers. These discs, typically made of glass or ceramic, are used to increase creepage distance and are called insulators. Insulators in overhead transmission lines serve two fundamental functions: supporting the conductors and preventing current from returning to ground. These two functions must be guaranteed. Insulators should not fail due to various electromechanical stresses caused by changes in environmental and electrical load conditions; otherwise, they will not perform their significant function, thus compromising the service life and operational lifespan of the entire transmission line.
